WHAT DOES THE PROJECT SOLVE?
The programme integrates specially trained dogs into educational settings to support and improve the learning experience for all students, particularly benefiting those who are neurodivergent. This initiative aims to foster an inclusive, supportive, and understanding school environment.
The programme was developed in response to growing demand from schools for accessible, effective wellbeing support, especially for students who are neurodivergent. Drawing on over a decade of experience training assistance dogs, AADI recognised the potential for these animals to become everyday companions in schools — easing anxiety, building confidence, and creating bridges between students. The programme aims to create a ripple effect, encouraging communities to embrace inclusivity and celebrate diversity.
Through careful selection, training, and placement, AADI introduces highly trained dogs into Irish primary and post-primary schools. Each dog is matched with a specific school, where they support staff and students in a variety of ways — from calming anxious students before exams to encouraging social interaction in ASD units. The programme also includes professional training for staff, support visits, and ongoing monitoring of student wellbeing and engagement.
The Animal Assisted Education Programme is a step toward a more inclusive and empathetic future. By introducing these trained companions into schools, the programme is not just supporting neurodivergent students, but fostering a broader understanding and acceptance of neurodiversity.
The programme's long-term goal is to establish a framework where every neurodivergent student in Ireland has the support needed to thrive academically and socially. By the end of 2025, AADI plans to expand the programme to 14 schools. With increased demand from schools and families, AADI is now working closely with the Department of Education and UCC researchers to position the model as a national best practice in inclusive education and emotional wellbeing.
The programme believes that every child — regardless of diagnosis — deserves a safe, supportive learning environment, and assistance dogs are helping build that future, one school at a time.
“It’s incredible to see the impact our dogs are having — from easing exam stress to improving classroom focus. Every school I visit tells a new story of connection, calm, and confidence. Thanks to the Royal Canin Foundation, we’re building something truly special for students across Ireland.”
Nadine Bohane, School Support Dog Instructor, AADI
“It’s hard to describe the difference Mabel has made. She’s changed the atmosphere in our school. Students feel calmer, safer, and more connected — even those who find it hard to communicate.”
Audrey Worsley, Deputy Principal, Scoil Íosagáin
“Students who struggle socially now talk to each other because of the dog. She brings people together.”
Deputy Principal, Christian Brothers Secondary School, Mitchelstown
"Having a School Support Dog like Mabel has made an extraordinary difference in our lives and in the lives of so many children. She has a special way of calming, encouraging, and empowering children. Every school should have a Mabel—if others could see what we see each day, they would understand the profound impact she has."
Michelle, Parent of Charlie (Age 9), Scoil Íosagáin
